It’s such a pleasure to introduce children to new subjects, such as dance, through literature. Watching them discover a new love for learning about a topic they’ve yet to explore is pure joy. These books will open a ballroom door to the world of dance in its wide variety of forms, from the gypsies who migrated from India to Spain to the prima ballerina who dedicates her life to her craft.

The Barefoot Book of Dance Stories by Jane Yolen and Heidi E.Y. Stemple is an eclectic collection including dance tales from Germany (The Twelve Dancing Princesses) Japan (Robe of Feathers) West Indies (Making the Stone Smoke) Spain (The Shepherd’s Flute) Czech Republic (Dancing with the Birch Fairy) Egypt (When The Goddess Danced) Scotland (Tam O’Shanter) and Mali (The Little Bird Who Went Dancing). Helen Cann’s paintings move and sinuate across the pages with brilliantly colorful strokes. Best of all, this book includes a CD with lively background music and grand dame of stage and screen Juliet Stevenson narrating the stories with her warm and gentle voice. (Ages 8 and up)

Miss Lina’s Ballerinas and the Prince is an amusing tale of a classroom of little ballerinas who must welcome a new student, a boy. Quelle horreur! Grace Maccarone’s book is somewhat reminiscent of the Madeline and the Bad Hat (although this boy is not nearly as horrid as Pepito) with its rhyming lilt and even Christine Davenier’s illustrations remind me a bit of the little girls in Paris visiting the zoo with dear Miss Clavel. No need to fear, the prince doesn’t upstage the girls and all’s well that ends well for the little ballerinas of Messina. (Ages 3-6)

Ole! Flamenco is the story of this expressive art form that has evolved over hundreds of year, but also the vital force that unites a vibrant flamenco community in Santa Fe, New Mexico. With George Ancona’s gorgeous photos throughout, you get the sense that the young boy learning to play guitar and sing and the young girl dancing and stomping her feet will continue to carry on this tradition for many generations. This step-by-step guide to the dance form and the music will demonstrate its inherent passion and creative energy to your children. (Pura Belpré Author Award Honor: ALSC/Reforma) (Ages 8-12)

It includes quotes throughout by famed dancers and choreographers and examples of unique dance performances for readers to view online. This book is for the focused young dancer who is serious about promoting his or her work yet it will also inspire kids curious about exploring the art form. (Ages 9 and up)

The truly stunning paintings transport the reader to nineteenth-century Paris where a young ballerina named Laura gets to dance on stage with Degas’s famous ballerinas. Together Albon and Kerillis have reimagined Degas’s “The Rehearsal of the Ballet on Stage” yet made it accessible for young readers.
by Chris Van Dusen

Reading level: Ages 4-8

Hardcover: 36 pages

Publisher: Chronicle Books (October 27, 2010)

Source: Publisher

What to expect: Skiing, Rhyme, a Dog, and a Moose

It’s not often that someone has the whole package—writing and illustrating, that is. Most well known for his adventurous duo Mr. Magee and his little dog Dee, Chris Van Dusen certainly has it. As a child, he spent hours and hours drawing pictures: “We didn’t have video games or computers to entertain us, so we drew instead. One of my brothers would sketch intricate war scenes. Another would draw animals so realistic you’d swear they were breathing. My specialty was aliens, robots and monsters.” Van Dusen also considered Dr. Seuss and Robert McCloskey as heroes—it’s no wonder he has a rhyming style to envy: “I loved the rhythm of Dr. Seuss’ words and I was fascinated by the meticulous detail of Robert McCloskey’s illustrations. I had no idea back then that I’d end up writing and illustrating children’s books when I grew up.” We’re so glad he did!

Mirroring Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee and A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee, Learning to Ski with Mr. Magee boasts the crackerjack formula that Van Dusen’s fans have all come to love: Adventure followed by a humorous mishap, self-realization, relief and a happy ending. The 60′s era inspired illustrations, which are rendered in cool colored hues of gouache, set the chilly-but-sunny scene brilliantly.

On a perfect blue bird day, Mr. Magee and his little dog Dee decide that they’d like to give skiing a try. After choosing a beautiful spot to practice—”Across from the house and just up the way is a great little hill with a view of the bay.”—the well-formulated mishap quickly trails. Mr. Magee and Dee, who is strapped onto Magee’s back, are heading straight for a Moose and are struck with the realization that Magee does not know how to stop his skis from sliding, they are sure to collide. The text is adrenalizing, the pictures even more so, as the pair manage to escape the predicament—not without much excitement—unscathed. Then comes the realization from Mr. Magee, “I think that I might need a lesson or two.” From the words that “zip” and “zing” from the page, to Mr. Magee’s extra-rosy cheeks and the stunning back-drop, this story offers a gentle reminder to spirited kids (and adults) that a little lesson, or technique, can go a long way (you may try Mini Grey’s Egg Drop for a more dramatic effect in this lesson). But, besides that, it’s a delightful winter read and pure fun for skiers, skiers-to-be, non-skiers and everyone in-between. Two mitten-clad thumbs-up!

This is a book list for sports enthusiasts, young Einsteins-in-the-making, myth busters, restless minds and grown men! From Potato Chip Science to The World’s Most Amazing Facts and Records, there is seriously something for everyone. And, while I would recommend most of these books to the most reluctant of readers—particularly boys—I would suggest that you don’t rule these suggestions out for girls. Young girls in particular have very curious minds and very much enjoy a good hands-on experiment—there’s also a beautiful and energetic baseball book which tells the inspiring story of Effa Manley.

The packaging of this kit (a “book & stuff”) alone has a ton of kid-appeal—it looks and feels like a bag of potato chips—but it’s not the cover from which we judge, it’s what is on the inside. Judge for yourself …

It’s World Cup Soccer time! Which means that there is a good chance you know someone who is suffering from World Cup Fever. This is one kind of fever that can’t be treated with medicine. It must be treated with a high dose of, you guessed it, soccer.
Filled with personal anecdotes and fully illustrated with both action and instructional photos, Go for the Goal shows readers exactly how to master the silky skills and techniques that have made Hamm and her teammates the finest women’s soccer team in the world.

Reading level: Ages 9-12

Hardcover: 40 pages

Publisher: Scholastic Press; 1 edition (October 1, 2009)

Publisher’s synopsis: When Jackie Robinson retires from baseball and moves his family to Connecticut, the beautiful lake on their property is the center of everyone’s fun. The neighborhood children join the Robinson kids for swimming and boating. But oddly, Jackie never goes near the water.

In a dramatic episode that first winter, the children beg to go ice skating on the lake. Jackie says they can go–but only after he tests the ice to make sure it’s safe. The children prod and push to get Jackie outside, until hesitantly, he finally goes. Like a blind man with a stick, (contd.)

Jackie taps on the ice’s surface, when suddenly howling and roaring sounds come out of the lake! It is only then that Sharon realizes why she’s never seen her father in the water — Jackie doesn’t know how to swim! But her horror changes to relief as Jackie bravely taps his way to the middle of the lake — and declare it safe!

In a stunning metaphor for Jackie Robinson’s legendary breaking of the color barrier in Major League Baseball, Sharon Robinson honors her extraordinary father’s memory with her warm graceful storytelling. Two-time Caldecott Honor Book artist Kadir Nelson has created richly rendered paintings that radiate with the beauty and spirit of one of America’s finest heroes.
