Based on historical facts, Harry Mazer has imagined a heart-warming and moving life for Abraham Lincoln’s older sister, Sally Lincoln. Mazer has given Sally a voice and enabled her to tell the story of family hardship and shed light on the close bond she had with her brother, Abe. I was able to form clear images of the era and surroundings in which they lived, due to the uncomplicated and pitch-perfect narration. Living in the 1800’s is a far cry from the living standards of today — family structure, schooling, health — any child that reads this book could only have appreciation for the strength of the characters. The notion that Abraham Lincoln desired to be schooled as a child, even when he could not be, sends a powerful message to children, showing them that life can be what you make of it. I felt my heart-break … and then thankfully mend itself with the touching ending. I truly believe that this is a must-read for any historical-fiction-lover. In this bicentennial birth year of Abraham Lincoln, you mustn’t miss this book.
