2 Books That Encourage Imaginative Play with a 3D Model to Build

The Children’s Book Review | July 20, 2016

A T-Rex and a Butterfly spring to life in these delightful craft books for children.

“Encourages imaginative play with a step-by-step 3D model to build, and simple facts to learn, ideal for young naturalists. ”

Both books might require a bit of help from parents, as pulling pieces out of the thick pages might be tricky. But the resulting 3-D models are particularly pretty. The paper engineering of both books is quite clever. When you remove pieces, you aren’t left with gaping holes. The books can be read over and again, even after the model is built. It’s a sturdy cardstock construction that is perfect for little hands.

Build a… T-Rex

Illustrated by Kiki Ljung

Age Range: 5 and up

Hardcover: 10 pages

Publisher: Frances Lincoln Books

ISBN: 978-1-84780-923-0

What to expect: Creatures, 3-D models, science facts

BUILD A…T-REX is a ferociously fun book. Begin you journey back in time with a basic timeline detailing which dinosaurs lived when. Newsflash: The T-Rex did not live in the Jurassic period. They lived in the Late Cretaceous period! Next, readers flip the page to learn more exciting T-Rex facts and get to unearth their first pieces in the 3-D model. And, much to the delight of children, when the pieces are removed, the dinosaur skeleton is left behind. As the book progresses, more pieces are unearthed for your 3-D model, as well as fun dinosaur facts. I was shocked to learn that T-Rex’s probably didn’t roar: they might have hissed like a snake! By the end of the book you will have built a terrific 3-D model of a T-Rex, perfect for your shelf. Highly recommended.

Build a… Butterfly

Illustrated by Kiki Ljung

Age Range: 5 and up

Hardcover: 10 pages

Publisher: Frances Lincoln Books

ISBN: 978-1-84780-922-3

What to expect: Creatures, 3-D models, science facts

In BUILD A…BUTTERFLY, children are asked to be naturalists and learn about and build a beautiful 3-D butterfly. The story begins with the life cycle of a butterfly, from egg, to caterpillar, pupa to butterfly. Just as readers built the T-Rex, children will build a delightful Painted Lady butterfly. Did you know that butterflies don’t have two wings, but rather have four? Children will find the journey of the Painted Lady butterfly fascinating. Over the course of many generations, they migrate from the Atlas Mountains in Africa all the way to the Arctic Circle. The intricate design of the 3-D model butterfly is truly delightful and especially leggy. Highly recommended.
