Author Showcase: Of Fairies and Witches and Kisses and Wishes by Phoebe Synn
By Christie Broughton, for The Children’s Book Review
Published: August 3, 2011
To be sure, there is nothing funny about werewolves, vampires, and black magic, but an imaginative child’s fanciful speculations about such troubling aspects of the enchanted realm can be delightfully humorous, as demonstrated in this brief excerpt from Of Fairies and Witches and Kisses and Wishes:
If I were to meet a vampire some night,
I’d ask if he wanted to be my friend.
Well, you never can tell; a vampire might
If he didn’t already have a friend.
But he’d have to promise me not to bite.
This lovely little volume of juvenile light verse includes many short, simple poems, like the one above, clearly aimed at the four-to-seven-year-old set, but even these will be found amusing to older readers as well. Other more-sophisticated poems deal with issues particularly relevant to the lives of pre-teens, first love being foremost amongst these:
If wishes really do come true,
As you assure me that they do,
Then maybe you can tell me why
When all my birthday candles I
Extinguished with a single puff,
That snotty Reginald McDuff
Persists in being so remiss.
He’s yet to steal a single kiss.
