Ferdinand Fox curled up in the sun

as the church of St Mary struck quarter past one.

His tummy was full, he was ready for sleep

and closing his eyes he began to count sheep.

When Peter Maceever spots Ferdinand Fox sleeping in his garden he tiptoes out to take a photo. He is sure that this fox will run off, so creeps as quietly as he can… But, at the click of the camera, Ferdinand hardly stirs – he has far more important things to do, like dream about cake and ice cream!

Ferdinand Fox’s Big Sleep is the first of six delightful rhyming picture books for 3-6 year-olds by British children’s author, Karen Inglis.

Beautifully illustrated, it introduces us to Ferdinand a kind-hearted urban fox who is always helping others. Ferdinand sleeps his way through this first endearing story – where, through his dream bubbles, he shares with us all of his favourite food! By the end of the story Ferdinand has left the garden – but we somehow know that we have just met a very special fox…

About the author

Karen Inglis lives in London, UK. She started writing children’s stories 15 years ago when her two boys were knee-high.  Her first two children’s books, The Secret Lake (for 8-11 yrs-olds) and Eeek! The Runaway Alien (for soccer-mad 7-10 yr-olds) have won praise from the UK’s Writers Advice Centre for Children’s Books – and from parents, teachers, librarians (and children!) – for their manageable length and page-turning qualities, as well as their appeal for both boys and girls.

  • Nice review, Karen! I’ll have to check out The Big Sleep–hadn’t seen it yet. I built a website to help parents and others find great children’s books. I’m a big fan of child literacy, as I’m sure you are. If anyone wants to browse, I arranged books by age group and story description. It’s at books-to-grow-by dot com.
