Michael Phillip Cash introduces readers to a fresh take on the popular genre of sci-fi novels.
Set on another planet known as Darracia, Cash delivers a familiar coming-of-age story in which 19-year-old Prince V’sair struggles with his need to prove himself to his family and the kingdom that he is destined to rule. More than just another fantastical novel, using the point of view from multiple characters, the plot is weaved around V’sair’s internal struggles to master the power of the Fireblade. The impeding social issues of diversity and finding “planet peace” make the need for V’sair to succeed even more important. There is also an underlying theme of “belief” or “faith” as the Trinity of the Elements appear to guide all happenings toward a moment of kismet—the moment when family crumbles, battles are fought and questions are answered.
“…Emmicus moved his finger to the boy’s heaving chest and gently touched the area over his heart. You must use tools other than brute strength to lead. …If you are to command, you must do it with your heart, soul, and mind. …The Trinity of the Elements alone will make you a leader—the greatest in the history of Darracia.”
Just to make sure he has your attention, in classic Cash style, the occasional crass line and gory scene, and moments of exciting young love find their way onto the pages—and attention Cash will keep. The characters are believable, as are the fantastical creatures, blossoming romances, and lessons of enlightenment.
The writing is smooth and builds nicely; creating an engaging tale with a big bang ending that leaves you thankful it is the beginning of a series. Definitely recommended for fans of dystopian novels in want of a fast page-turning read.
