Hop into an imaginary green and yellow rickshaw taxi and whizz through the lively pages with a pair of young narrators, an Indian boy and girl, who will guide readers on a tour of this richly cultural country.
The tour begins with a lesson about the location of India and, as in all of the books in this series, the child narrators point clearly to an illustrated globe, which has the country highlighted. Once bearings are set, major places of interest are visited—including the capital, New Delhi, where laws are made—and through these cities and monuments a glimpse of this country’s flavorful history is offered. While we’re on the topic of flavor, the page dedicated to food is jam-packed with information about spices used in cooking and favorite dishes—teachers and caregivers may want to be ready to lead a lassi making activity after story time. Readers that are already familiar with this series may notice slightly more sophisticated language and descriptions that will expand their vocabulary and may require use of the helpful pronunciation guide at the back of the book—it’s so fun for children to learn new words and their meanings.
For younger readers, this book serves as an engaging introduction to India and becoming acquainted with the world around them. For older readers it provides a wonderful stepping-stone to deeper studies and hands-on activities led by inspired teachers and caregivers. Reading books that showcase a diverse range of ethnicities is key to raising accepting and global children—what a great concept for a series!
