Orion Poe is an eleven-year-old boy who lives in Maine with his grandfather who is the caretaker of a lighthouse. When a large storm rolls in one evening, Orion discovers a washed-up boat and an injured man. From this moment on, he finds himself fighting for survival on a mysterious expedition full of unexpected and non-stop adventure that is connected to the historic event of an explorer, John Franklin, who was lost in the Arctic in 1847.

Orion travels through ice filled seas to a strange island and danger seems to be around every wave, cave, and mountain. There is plenty of intriguing grown-up characters to aid in keeping Orion safe during the expedition (as well as some who appear to have hidden agendas); however, his wit and a few turns of very good luck, as well as his banding with a group of freedom-fighting children reminiscent of Peter Pan’s Lost Boys, are the key to his endurance.

The atmosphere created by the author, Will Summerhouse, is current yet the storytelling feels timeless. He has given Orion a clear confident voice, which matches the action that takes place and also adds believability. With all of the suspenseful moments, stops and turns, and colorful characters that offer readers moments of moral consideration, Orion Poe and the Lost Explorer is a true page-turner and readers will be sure to get lost amongst the pages.
