Discover the western European country of Portugal with award-winning author and former social studies teacher Carole P. Roman.

If You Were Me and Lived in … Portugal: An Introduction to Learning About Other Cultures is rich in facts and old world charm, European culture and beautiful natural wonders like the Azores, a chain of nine volcanic islands. As children are quite sensory learners, appealing to their sense of taste is a smart way to hold attention—Roman dishes to readers on the main Portuguese cuisine … fish. She is also quick to share that kids are often served a yummy custard tart for dessert. With soccer being a huge theme right now (thanks to World Cup Soccer, 2014), enthusiasts of the sport will know that it is incredibly popular in Portugal and was a definite must for inclusion among the fun facts that fill this book. A double page spread is dedicated to the parades, dancing and food of the Portugal Carnevale and the text is complimented with lively and colorful illustrations. There are some fun questions where readers are prompted to guess the meaning of some Portuguese words—the glossary can be used for help with pronunciation and understanding.

This is another informative addition to a series that showcases diversity and offers wonderful cultural experiences to children. Parents that choose to read along or to their children are also bound to learn a tidbit or two.
