Jimi & Isaac 2a: Keystone Species
By Phil Rink
Paperback: 152 pages
Age Range: 10 and up
Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (April 26, 2014)
What to expect: Boating Skills, Marine Ecology, Friendship, Survival
Good friends Jimi and Isaac set off on an oceanic coming-of-age adventure of a lifetime.
What is supposed to be two friends going on a sailing vacation with Jimi’s Uncle Tim, turns into an animal conservation project that could leave the sailing crew in trouble with the law or, worst, to sink with the ship. Jimi and Isaac are completely unsuspecting of the epic and dangerous events that are begging to drag them into a riptide of trouble.
Author Phil Rink balances this character driven story by carefully intertwining boating skills, seamanship, and marine ecology knowledge for both the readers and the characters. This knowledge turns out to be a large part of a puzzle-piecing plot and leads to a believable ending. Each of the main characters has a distinct and relatable personality. Rink offers subtle hints to the readers that Uncle Tim could potentially be a troublemaker, but perhaps one that you would be happy to rally behind. Jimi and Isaac make for good role models—when the boys are in trouble, inquisitive Isaac turns to books and manuals to seek knowledge and together they problem solve and work hard to use the knowledge they already have to maintain level heads when the going gets tough.
Jimi and Isaac 2a: Keystone Species is a nice choice for adventure-seeking middle graders that like knowing how things work. It’s a quick read and part of a series that offers more adventures with the same likable friends.
