What to expect: Pirates, Northern Lights, Making Good Choices

In the latest installment to Carole P. Roman’s award-wining series, Captain No Beard and his crew are heading in the direction of the North Star. This time they’re on a journey that the captain’s team is not so keen on joining—Captain No Beard has plans to take something without asking permission.

The Artic weather is freezing and, as the Flying Dragon steers their way around ice caps, the crew must stay warm as they embark on this latest mission that tests their loyalty and camaraderie. In awe of the spectacular Northern Lights known as the Aurora borealis, Captain No Beard has the desire to bring the lights home with him. The task of removing the lights from the sky and taking them home is questionable and the team is stunned that their captain would even consider stealing. Thankfully, the crew’s integrity stays in tact when wise Hallie makes a suggestion that will help Captain No Beard capture his own little piece of the Northern Lights that he can keep forever without having to pilfer from the sky itself—it’s an artistic solution that the whole team is more than happy to participate in.

Full color illustrations pop from the pages and emphasize each of the characters’ personalities. The standout illustration is the double page spread that showcases the sky streaked in the beautiful colors of the Northern Lights with the Flying Dragon silhouetted on the horizon. The text is arranged nicely around the pictures and the larger font makes this book a nice choice for young pirates that are ready to read alone.

Using the safety of imagination, Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis encourages readers to make good choices. It’s a story that will shine bright in the minds of curious and adventure-loving readers.
