Carole P Roman, former teacher turned children’s book author, has written a series of books introducing the reader to various countries and their cultures. If You Were me and Lived in … Peru: A Child’s Introduction to Cultures Around the World briefly highlights cultural, geographic, and historical aspects unique to Peru.

Through a simple map, children will immediately find Peru’s location in South America. Readers will then find key facts such as the capital, population, and origin of the word Lima. Each page is devoted to the important aspects of Peru; including their national festival, Machu Picchu and the ancient Incan civilization.

The combination of information presented includes geographic knowledge, regional foods, and important historical and cultural events along with a pronunciation glossary. Each page highlights basic identifications of some common conversational words with a phonetic pronunciation key following each Spanish word. Children’s names, parts of clothing, favorite sports, games, and favorite toys are all well integrated and will certainly help children recognize similarities between Peru and their own home.

Roman’s description of the regional food dishes is well described including the Spanish name of the dish, the ingredients used and the historical or agricultural significance of the dish. Again, the phonetic pronunciations engage the reader to try and pronounce the word rather than skip over the word—a great beginning tool for raising bilingual kids.

Due to the well condensed and simplistic format, this book and the entire series can easily be the basis for further discussions of Peru, the Spanish language, cultures, traditions, historical sites and home life. It’s a great choice for either a home or classroom environment where it can be used as a fun interactive read for early grade school aged children.
