Tammi Sauer’s Selfie with Mary Had a Little Glam

With a book like Mary Had a Little Glam, I couldn’t just take a selfie in my standard writing uniform (yoga pants topped with old Kansas State University sweatshirt). Nope. This situation called for beads. It called for sunglasses. It called for…a little glam.

Mary Had a Little Glam was written by yours truly and illustrated by the oh-so-fine Vanessa Brantley-Newton. In this fun take on Mother Goose, fashion-forward Mary helps some of childhood’s most beloved characters go glam. From Jack and Jill to Little Miss Muffet, Mary’s school friends soon look fabulous in their finery. But when they all head to the playground for recess, there’s a big problem, and it’s up to Mary to save the day.

This is my first book written in rhyme. It was a challenge and a thrill to not only share Mary’s story but to do so using the familiar framework of “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Ooh. La. La.

Tammi Sauer’s Shelfie

I have bookshelves all over my house, but this particular shelf sits above my desk, and it holds many of my favorite picture books. Having these books in close proximity as I work fills me with joy, wonder, and inspiration. Plus, I am hopeful that the genius behind many of them will somehow rub off on my writing. A few of these books are lyrical. Most of them are funny. But each and every one has heart.
