What to expect: Viking Europe, Educational, History, Social Studies

Award-winning author Carole P. Roman invites readers to travel back in time—some 1100 years ago—to the era of Viking Europe in this installment of her famed book series. Before taking off, readers can take a good look at what their possible home on the coast of Norway looks like currently.

In this educational book, readers experience what it would be like to live in this time period. Readers learn about the explorations, vocations, and dwellings of Vikings. It’s a smooth blend of history and social studies where kids can learn about currency, class, food, clothing, seasons, and the games children played.

By narrating directly to the reader, Carole P. Roman positions children to truly consider themselves in this time period. She emphasizes the learning segments that children will relate to the most, such as family life and what the inside of their house would look like. Roman also knows that showing similarities and differences provides a relatable experience that adds to the enjoyment of this educational offering; for example, she points out that in Viking Europe, even though women had more freedom than most women in Europe, a woman could never be chief or vote in the assemblies. Mateya Arkova’s folk style illustrations are colorful and inviting—a combination that works well with informational texts.

If You Were Me and Lived in … Viking Europe is another great addition to this edutainment series for children ages 7 and up. This is a good choice for anyone looking for an experiential learning tool to introduce children to different and fascinating time periods.
