Written and Illustrated by Melissa Sweet

Publisher’s Synopsis: “SOME PIG,” Charlotte the spider’s praise for Wilbur, is just one fondly remembered snippet from E. B. White’s Charlotte’s Web. In Some Writer!, the two-time Caldecott Honor winner Melissa Sweet mixes White’s personal letters, photos, and family ephemera with her own exquisite artwork to tell his story, from his birth in 1899 to his death in 1985. Budding young writers will be fascinated and inspired by the journalist, New Yorker contributor, and children’s book author who loved words his whole life. This authorized tribute is the first fully illustrated biography of E. B. White and includes an afterword by Martha White, E. B. White’s granddaughter.

    About the Author-Illustrator

Melissa Sweet has illustrated nearly 100 children’s books from board books to picture books and nonfiction titles. Her collages and paintings have appeared in the New York Times and Martha Stewart Living, on Madison Park Greetings and Smilebox cards, and on a line of eeBoo toys. She received a Caldecott Honor Medal for a River of Words by Jen Bryant
and two New York Times Best Illustrated citations.

In BALLOONS OVER BROADWAY: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade, Sweet uses her trademark mixed-media illustrations and a clear but charming text (“Tony Sarg, rhymes with aargh”) to explain the various versions of puppets and balloons Sarg made for the parade, each better than the last, until finally creating the helium-filled balloons we see today. With a gorgeous palette, sidebars of diagrams, archival photographs, and newspaper clippings, Sweet explores the legacy of a creative, fun-loving man who imbued his work with his own playful sensibility and joie de vivre.

Melissa lives with her husband and dogs in Rockport, Maine. For more information, visit www.melissasweet.net.

I am so excited for this opportunity to win a copy of this book! I just sent a picture of it to my daughter as my children grew up watching Charlottes Web….we walked around the house singing “Chin Up!” They say the illustrations are beautiful!! Good luck to all!

Charlotte’s Web was one of my favorite books in elementary school. Plus my 5 kids read this classic story in their schools, so the family tradition continues. My grandson is next in line for this story. As someone who likes to read, learning about authors and what inspires their craft helps answer a few of my questions.
