If you travel safely to the southwestern shore of the Middle East via Carole P. Roman’s latest addition to her popular culture series, you will get a solid glimpse into what it would be like to live in Israel—a country that many religions consider the Holy Land.
Readers will visit one of the oldest cities in the world, Jerusalem, and receive a brief and interesting history lesson. They will learn some of the popular names that parents choose for their children, and also what they would call their parents: Ima (mommy) and Abba (daddy). Next there is a visit to the open-air market where the experience of purchasing clothing and fresh food with “shekels” is introduced. Highlights include having a soak in the Dead Sea, a visit with grandparents in the important city of Tel Aviv, and eating falafel wrapped in pita bread. Another point of interest is learning about the celebration of Purim.
Carole P. Roman’s writing is factual yet wholly inviting. Historical information is intermingled strategically with kid-centric facts and tidbits to keep the pages turning and make learning and discovering fun. The descriptions of different foods are particularly appetizing. Kelsea Wierenga’s illustrations, digital renderings that occasionally overlay photographs, provide enjoyable visuals to go along with the text.
