What to expect: Monsters, gore, page-turning suspense
In Monsterland, author Michael Okon has unleashed a story that is sure to become the next YA sensation. Okon skillfully weaves a terrifying tale told from several different perspectives. The result is a wholly engrossing, spine-tingling thriller.
In a not-too-distant future, young Wyatt Baldwin lives in an economically depressed town in California. As jobs disappear and businesses close, the townspeople find themselves struggling to make ends meet. But conditions are similar around the world, as a wide-ranging recession threatens to derail the global economy. In this alternate reality, humans have co-existed with vampires and werewolves for centuries but the precautions that have been put into place to keep the vampires from creating new recruits and to limit the areas where werewolves can hunt are being tested. Further complicating matters is the spread of a plague that turns its victims into mindless beings that are driven only by their need to eat human flesh, also known as zombies.
As tensions rise between the living and the monsters, a benevolent doctor creates a plan that will provide entertainment for the humans, an economic boost for the ailing economy and a safe place for the vampires, werewolves and zombies. Monsterland will be an amusement park and a scientific research center that will search for a cure to the zombie plague as well as providing a haven for werewolves and vampires. Although Wyatt and his friends have some reservations about Monsterland, they decide to go on opening day to see the gory spectacle for themselves. What they experience on that day will change their world forever.
This fast-paced story will delight fans of dystopian fiction and horror stories. Chock full of action and suspense, readers won’t be able to put this book down.
