I get my kids to calm down by sometimes requiring a time out depending on situation and other than that, sitting to read a good book. Most of my 5 kids love to read so that helps.

I would love to give this to my grand-dughter. When a child needs to calm and refocus, the first thing I look at is myself—am I nervous? distracted? upset? Then I look at the environment–too loud? too busy? Then the child–hungry? thirsty? over-tired? Once those are settled, then I may read a book to her or suggest a quiet game to play together.

Being an avid book reader obviously I resort to books to calm my kids down. Many times when my kids are frazzled and not centered I set them apart and one by one I read a book with them. Give it a good 20 minutes and after putting up a little fight…soon they relax and find themselves immersed in the story. The calm and peace allows them to refocus.

I want to win the gift code for holiday gifts for the family. I make sure the kids sit down and share meals with us. Happy stomachs make for good brain energy which helps the kids concentrate. A nice cup of warm water or juice at our “tea time” helps them calm down too.

As a 30 yr retired veteran teacher of Kinder/1st grade helping kids learn to calm down was a daily process. A soft spoken voice, listening to the child, moving the child to a place away from noise or distraction so that they can feel safe, & paper & crayons to draw what is bothering them really has made a difference & calmed the child down. I have used this with my own daughter & now granddaughter & the reward of picking their favorite books to read brings them into a peaceful, quiet & soothing atmosphere.
