What to expect: Western Story, Travel, Courage, Adventure

The Hideout Kids series by Mike Gleason kicks off with a whip and a neigh with the first book, Tuff, Sadie, & The Wild West. This charming story about two friends, Tuff and Sadie, who move from New York City to a small town in Texas, is every bit as daring as it is exciting.

The two friends embark on the journey to Muleshoe, Texas, when Tuff’s aunt becomes too sick to care for him at home in New York. With his friend Sadie in tow, the two 10-year olds travel by train, covered wagon, and horse on their journey through the Wild West. Along the way, the two city slickers encounter bandits and familiar faces, and quickly learn how the ways of the west are different from their lives back home.

Gleason pens a whimsical but distinctly western story, filled with bright descriptions and hidden surprises. His fluid style helps readers feel like they can find a place riding along with the characters during their journey. Tuff and Sadie rise to the occasion of their trip, demonstrating to young readers the power of cleverness and sticking to a plan.

This easy read will entertain and delight elementary-aged readers who enjoy books about exploration, courage, and travel. Teachers and parents will also find the story of Hideout Kids: Tuff, Sadie, & The Wild Westto be an uplifting and fast-paced tale that is fun to share with young readers, who will eagerly want to grab the next book in the series to continue the adventure. The Hideout Kids series is sure to be a beloved favorite that will be read again and again.

Leah Sylvan is a former analytical and deadline-driven IT project manager who is working on tapping into her creative side. She loves to read, eat delicious food, run, listen to music, and enjoy all things that relate to to her two beautiful daughters. (Except the gross stuff - her husband gets to handle the gross stuff.) Her favorite childhood books as a young kid were Shaggy Dogs and Spotty Dogs, ’Twas the Night Before Christmas, and The Cat in The Hat. As a big kid ... Nancy Drew books... ALL of them! She wishes she could travel to more distant places in the world, but also yearns to stay local and set foot in every corner of her beautiful home state of Colorado.
