    Moon- A Peek-Through Picture BookMoon: A Peek-Through Picture Book

Written and Illustrated by Britta Teckentrup

    Age Range: 3-7

    Hardback: 32 pages

Publisher: Doubleday Books for Young Readers

    ISBN: 978-1-524-76966-6

What to expect: Non-Fiction, Moon, Animals, Bedtime

It’s uncommon for non-fiction books to have such lyrical prose and elegant illustrations, but MOON, A PEEK-THROUGH BOOK has managed to pull it all off.

With richly saturated images of animals and exotic locations around the world, Britta Teckentrup draws little readers in to this graceful and rhythmic book. Add in the smartly designed cutouts of the moon rolling through its phases, and this book is an interactive delight. The designs are reminiscent of Jon Klassen’s work – simple, but poignant. Teckentrup layers her imagery to great success, making it worthwhile to stop and study each illustration. My daughter especially enjoyed all the variety of locations and animals. From sweet little puffins up North, to exotic birds and colorfully-eyed frogs in the evening mists of the jungle, every child will find their favorite animal on one of the pages.

The gentle rhyming adds to the perfect bedtime routine, finishing with imagining the moon shining down on all of us. And what an exciting message of peace – that we, along with our animal friends, are all looking up at the same mysterious moon up in the night sky. The phases of the moon are particularly clever, and pair nicely with lessons about the moon and astronomy.

This is a fantastic selection for the child who loves the night sky, or perhaps a class learning about the moon.

    Highly recommended.

She likes to read, cook, dance, travel and forward pictures of spam sculptures to friends. If she could have dinner with any author, dead or alive, it would be a toss up between J.K. Rowling and Jane Austen. They would probably eat pasta. Yes, definitely pasta. For more information, visit: www.dccmealy.com You can also find her on Twitter: @dccmealy
