What to expect: Moral Values, Birds, Adventure, Seasons

Shadow’s Unexpected Adventure is a short illustrated story about two birds with the desire to trade places. Their adventure proves that even the best-laid plans aren’t always foolproof.

Shadow is a redwing blackbird. His best friend, Bright Eyes, is a bluebird. This means that when winter comes, Bright Eyes flies south for warmer weather, while Shadow stays put and endures the colder weather. When together, they  often exchange stories of how they each spend their winters. They both love the thought of experiencing what the other has shared in their stories: snow and ice vs. sand and sun. So they formulate a plan—a plan that will not be easy, but could possibly be pulled off with a little imagination and trickery.

Author Mary Clark Dalton specializes in telling stories with moral values. Shadow’s Unexpected Adventureweaves its way through character descriptions, scenes, and dialog between the birds and their fathers, which enables young readers to easily follow along with the plot. The story includes some subtle and some not-so-subtle life lessons:

    • If you make a mistake, use your experience to help others avoid making the same mistake.
    • If you are ever having second thoughts, be brave and stand up to a friend with your honest feelings.
    • The grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

This chirpy story—along with the folk-vibe, colorful illustrations—will appeal to young readers ages 5-8 that enjoy well-planned adventures.
