What to expect: Nighttime, the moon, animals

Kim Krans, author of the popular 123 DREAM and ABC DREAM books, has created a beautiful nighttime ballad with WHOSE MOON IS THAT?

The question is posed by the cat at first, staring up at a bright full moon. Animals of the forest, the ocean, and even the mountains answer her, and all take credit. Perhaps more charming than the animals’ claims is that of the starry sky, who says, “The moon is held by me.”

Finally, the moon weighs in. “When darkness falls, I’m a light for all. Yet no one owns my glow.”

The cat settles in for her nap before waking the next day and asking, “Who’s sun is that?”

These gorgeous and unique illustrations are mesmerizing for children. Krans’ saturated water colors and intricate sketches combine to create a dazzlingly dark – yet colorful – book that’s unlike anything else. The black of night seeps in to each picture, set off by the colorful sky and moonlight. It’s a catching juxtaposition that truly sets this book (as well as her previous books) apart. Combined with a sweet rhyming story that perfectly captures each animal’s voice, this is a real treat for children and the parents who will find themselves reading it night after night. The idea of sharing the moon with all things in the world creates a global vision of inclusiveness that children will relate to. The moon belongs to everything, and to no one, yet brings delight to all.

Highly recommended.
