What to expect: Hunting Dogs, Rescue Dog, and Fitting In

Author Frank Payne’s picture book chronicles one beagle’s heartening journey from hunting dog to rescue dog to therapy dog.

Born a hunting dog in Virginia, Webster’s chore was to chase animals with hunters and the other dogs in his pack. Webster would have preferred playing to hunting, and he would have certainly preferred not having to fight for food and a comfortable place to sleep each day. One day, while out hunting, Webster is separated from his pack and spends two long days lost and alone in the woods—it turns out that being alone and without food is worse than sharing the kennel with all of the other hunting dogs. However, when Webster comes across a hunter in the woods, his life takes a turn for the better. The hunter sees something special in Webster and their lives interlink for a tale that teaches readers about the power of spreading joy.

Children will freely take to the cheery characters that grace the pages in a series of colorful digital illustrations. The words are written in a factual and detailed way, making it easy for readers to follow Webster’s path of finding his forever home and his true calling. The author shows through this story that with perseverance and adaptability (and perhaps a little luck), change can bring great happiness—not just for yourself, but also for many others around you.

All of the proceeds from the sale of Webster the Beagle go to local charities.
