What to expect: Humor, Parent Child Relationship, School, and Rhyme

Author Sonya Annita Song and illustrator Kate Fallahee take the well-known story of a child not wanting to go to school, and turn it completely upside down in this humorous picture book.

In My Teacher Dad, a young boy is exasperated by the fact that his “teacher dad” does not want to go to school. Teacher Dad is seen, at every turn, avoiding getting out of bed, hanging out in the teacher’s lounge chewing gum, skating around, wanting to read comic books all day, and rolling around in the grassy playground. If the students are to learn anything, the son has to take over teaching the classroom of kids. An illustration on the chalkboard shows two words—irresponsible and harebrained—and the boy’s pointer stick is hovered over “irresponsible.” Don’t expect any patriarchy in this tale either—Mom is a police officer and clearly holds authority within the household. When Dad worries that his son will let Mom know that he has not been toeing the line, some progress is made. Will it be enough to get Dad into the classroom though?

“Well, Dad, I’m going to count to ten,

    And then I’m telling Mom.

My dad then jolted out of bed

As if I’d dropped a bomb.”

Song’s rhymes are succinct and funny, and Fallahee’s illustrations make the characters come to life—their well-designed personalities add even more humor. The son’s infuriated facial expressions and the father’s begrudging looks are amusingly over-the-top.

While this book is dedicated to all kids with teacher dads and teacher moms, any parent and school-aged child will be sure to find the humor in this short and snappy rhyming story.
