What to expect: Golf, Girls, and Positivity

Starting with the familiar phrase of “Once upon a time,” two young girls, Alice and Izzy, set out to practice with their golf coach, Jenn. It’s a beautiful day and Coach Jenn encourages the girls to have fun. Izzy starts off with “a spectacular drive down the middle fairway,” but Alice misses the golf ball and instantly feels defeated. When she tries again, her ball sails past Izzy’s ball, but Alice is still not satisfied with her original miss. When Izzy hits a ‘chunk’ on her next swing with her ball landing only 2 feet ahead, she still remains positive and this allows her to come back for her next swing and succeed in getting her ball onto the green. Alice is still in a funk however, and this reflects in her playing. Coach Jenn and Izzy encourage Alice to focus on being positive always, and as she adds a smile to her practice her game begins to improve—and even when she doesn’t make the best shots she begins to enjoy the game more anyway.

This picture book offers a sweet introduction to the sport of golf, but most importantly it highlights the great effect a positive attitude can have on a sports game and an entire day. There is also a subtle message on the appreciation of nature that can come from paying attention to your surroundings: “They enjoyed all the pretty trees and the cute bunnies … .” Alice and Izzy are the main stars of the luminous illustrations, while Coach Jenn is featured as an avatar-type illustration that appears next to the text—this illustration style enhances the idea that Coach Jenn is always there to guide and support them, but the girls must find it within themselves to adjust their mindset. The color green is the perfect backdrop for the additional vivid pops of color used to illustrate the girls, the animals, and the colorful sky—the artwork is warm and encouraging, just like the words of the story.

Recommended for any new golfers—or any sports players—that could do with a little reminder on the power of positivity.
