In this compelling novella, readers get a more in-depth look at the life of a lesser-known character from the namesake novella, Bulwark. (Bulwark is the novella that started the entire anthology, which is now nine books deep in stand-alone stories.)
Once known as Dangerous Dayna Dalton to her Georgetown University sorority sisters, Dayna has traded in her hard-hitting Washington, DC, journalism days. She now produces fluffy reporting for the Bulwark Advance. She had returned to Bulwark to care for her mother as she battled breast cancer, and has since stayed on because of her attraction to Sheriff Clay Finnes. She has been in love with Clay since high school but their paths never seem to align. Stuck in a cycle of heavy alcohol consumption and a questionable choice of partners, Dayna feels judged continuously by her nosy apartment complex neighbor. Strange things are known to happen in Bulwark, and Dayna finds herself unraveling some deep secrets when she drives down Old Jericho Road.
Lunden has written an engaging romance that blends contemporary storytelling with a hint of mysticism and Greek mythology. As she writes in the author’s note, she aims to show that we can understand more about a person when we see them as a whole. Hence she pulled Dayna, a bothersome reporter, from the Bulwark novella. An entirely telling picture has been painted of this multi-layered human desperately trying to escape the path that has been laid out for her from the moment of her conception. For those that have been following the anthology, other main characters from previous Bulwark stories take on smaller parts and are brilliantly woven into the story. This book contains some of Brit Lunden’s steamiest scenes yet.
Sometimes by letting go of what we cannot have, we allow ourselves to find a greater love. This is the solace that readers can aim to take away from this profoundly poetic story.
