    Written by Steve Michael Reedy

    Illustrated by Tom Lee

    Age Range: 8+

    Hardcover: 204 pages

Publisher: Monkey Mind Tales (January 1, 2020)

    ISBN-13: 978-0997792041

What to expect: Fables, Life Lessons

Through poetry, wise prose and an array of fantastical characters, author Steve Michael Reedy provides readers with a collection of kid-friendly, enjoyable tales that encourage humility and emphasize living in harmony. The entire collection offers an enchanting world that feels both familiar and imaginary, allowing readers to immerse themselves freely in priceless life lessons.

This compilation of tales begins and ends with a poem about a man and wife who travel the open seas on a boat lined with shelves of books. The tales are told as stories from within the books on these shelves, each of them offering a different mood—sweet, silly, or scary (but not too scary)—and all of them providing a moral. Readers will discover the power of positive thinking and learn the difference between being worried and being careful. They will also learn the importance of being accepted for who you are, which begins with accepting yourself.  Additional lessons include being wary of tricksters and learning from your mistakes.

Well-crafted poems are scattered throughout, along with appealing pen and ink illustrations, breaking up the thoughtful prose that also, at times, begs to be read like poetry.

    “I often found, while musing,

    That life can be confusing.

What road should I be using?

Which path should I be choosing?”

If pondering significant questions like the ones in the above quote will intrigue your young reader, ages 8 and up, then they will love discovering Reedy’s answers in this well-written compendium of bewitching life lessons!
