The Dragon and the Unicorn: The Magic of Friendship

The Dragon and the Unicorn: The Magic of Friendship

    Written by Charly Froh

    Illustrated by Zuzana Svobodova

    Ages 4+ | 40 Pages

    Publisher: Pelican Publishing | ISBN-13: 9783910542181

What to Expect: Friendship, inclusivity, teamwork, magical creatures

Through two loveable, magical protagonists, The Dragon and the Unicorn teaches readers about celebrating differences, finding common ground, and working together.

What two creatures could be more different than a magical unicorn and a fiery dragon? Dan the Dragon and Fran the Unicorn are both happy—they don’t think they need anything else in the whole world. However, when a storm blows them both far from home, they find themselves in predicaments they cannot solve alone. Luckily, they find each other! Dan uses his fire to help Fran get unstuck from the ice, and Fran uses her magic horn to help Dan’s broken wing heal. Working together, they realize—the world is even better when you have a friend at your side!

Recognizable situations, like getting lost, eating, and being hurt, help readers identify with Fran and Dan, despite the fantasy setting of the story. Simple text with lots of repetition and carefully chosen font effects supports weaker readers in developing literacy and offers plenty of gentle humor. The illustrations are magical, too, with glowing colors and textures that will make readers want to reach out and stroke the pages.

Overall, The Dragon and the Unicorn is a sweet, heart-warming story, perfect for teaching readers about friendship.
