Book Series Review of 12 Systems of the Body: Adventure Series
    The Children’s Book Review

What to Expect: Health, Biology, Anatomy, Science, Interactive

The Know Yourself Academy workbooks offer a fun and accessible way for young readers to get engaged with health science, anatomy, and their bodies.

The complete series covers 12 bodily systems, including the five senses, the skeletal system, the muscular system, the nervous system, the respiratory system, the digestive system, and the immune system. Readers will learn about the body’s parts, functions, and processes through comic-book adventure story-telling and interactive activities such as cooking, yoga, science experiments, and treasure hunts. Other activities, such as writing prompts, puzzles, and word searches, help readers build literacy.

Understanding the human body is essential for health literacy, but anatomy and biology can be dry subjects for young readers. The Know Yourself Academy series brings this subject to life with stories that combine science with history, culture, adventure, and activities that get readers up and moving and discovering with their hands, bodies, and brains. A real strength of the series is that it encourages learning through multiple learning styles, encouraging readers to build knowledge through writing, listening, making, seeing, moving, and reading.

The language throughout is accessible, and storytelling and imagery contribute to an easy and fun reading experience. The illustration is colorful, dynamic, and accurate enough to convey complex scientific and medical information. The sets include bonus extras, such as coloring sets, flashcards, and OrganautsTM keychains. Overall, these sets are fantastic, engaging educational tools.
