What to Expect: farm animals, friendship, empathy, relationships

Once again, James DeLaura, author of Finley and the Big Bad Shark, has provided young readers with a story in which they can learn the value of friendship.

Life on Mr. Evan’s farm should be peaceful and fun, but not with Benny the Bull around. Benny the Bull is thoughtless and rude to the other animals, and as a result, they call him Benny the Bully Bull and do not like him very much. One day Benny finds himself in big trouble and calls for the other animals to help him. Will they? Or will they ignore his pleas?

Benny the Bull offers clear examples of anti-friendship behaviors and shows how these actions affect those around him. The apparent conflict and ultimate resolution provide ample opportunities for discussion of how to be a good friend and what the qualities of a friend can look like. Along with a powerful story, DeLaura has provided cartoon-like illustrations. These bright and charming pictures add to the read-aloud experience by clearly demonstrating to non-readers the problems Benny is causing among his farm animal friends.

Benny, the Bully Bull is a delightful SEL (Social-emotional Learning) resource book that would fit in any classroom or home library and is perfect for children who struggle with friendship or are experiencing complicated friendship issues themselves.

About the Author

James V. DeLaura, a retired New York City Police Captain, never imagined during his twenty-one years in law enforcement and thirty years in corporate security that he would be writing and publishing children’s books. He was just an average dad who liked to make up stories to help educate his three children. Recently, he found himself telling those same stories to his grandchildren. Now, finally retired and encouraged by his family, he decided to put pen to paper and give writing and publishing a try.

Benny, the Bully Bull is his fourth published work. Finley and the Big Bad Shark, a fun and exciting story that teaches children the importance of listening to and obeying their parents, is his third. Tippy, the Turtle, an enchanting story that teaches children the importance of eating all their meals, was his second. His first, The Land of Numbers, a unique math-teaching story about adding numbers one to ten, meets the core requirement “ways to make ten” for kindergarten.
