These days, with two children in college and one in high school, my family is not often under the same roof. But over the holidays, when we were all together, I asked them to help me select five favorite family books. We pulled titles from the bookshelves, made piles, discussed, reminisced, and then voted. Here are the results:

My husband was a huge Winnie-the-Pooh fan as a boy. When I learned I was pregnant with my first child, I gave him a copy of this book and signed it “For Daddy to read to his baby.” The adventures and philosophies of that “Silly Old Bear” were so much a part of our family’s life that we even named our first dog Winnie.

When my children were little, our evening bedtime routine always ended with a reading of The Going to Bed Book. My kids giggled at the silly antics of an ark filled with eclectic animals, and they were soothed by Boynton’s rhythmic language. This is still one of my go-to books for baby shower gifts.

I love poetry. To instill that love in my children, I filled their bookshelves with children’s poetry collections and wove poetry into our reading routine. We especially enjoyed Florian’s quick and witty poems about a menagerie of animals, including a daddy longlegs that does “spiderobic exercise,” a vulture “weak on culture,” and a praying mantis that swallows prey religiously.

Although mother python tells her hatchling to “grow up big and green,” Verdi is not so sure he wants to become a giant, lazy snake. He loves being young, spry, and adventurous. Verdi’s antics entertained my kids while teaching them fascinating facts about green tree pythons. Nonfiction elements wrapped in a great story made this book a winner in our house.
