Hello Kitty Presents the Storybook Collection | Book Review

The Children’s Book Review | January 24, 2017

Hello Kitty, everyone’s favorite Sanrio feline pal, is here to tell the story of two classic tales: Little Red Riding Hood and The Little Mermaid.

What to expect: Fairy tales, famous friends

Hello Kitty Presents the Storybook Collection: Little Red Riding Hood

Written by Sanrio

In LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD, Hello Kitty is off to visit her sick grandmother. As the tale usually goes, she wears a red cape wherever she goes. In this sweet and much-toned down version, Hello Kitty meets a wolf on her walk through the dangerous forest. He runs ahead, hides in her grandmother’s bed, and waits to surprise her. What a trickster! A passing farmer saves the day, and grandmother comes back to reprimand the naughty wolf who is sent off with his tail between his legs. Then it’s a happy ending of soup and cookies for all!

Hello Kitty Presents the Storybook Collection: The Little Mermaid

In THE LITTLE MERMAID, Hello Kitty is a precocious young mermaid. She longs to travel to the surface, but must wait until she is old enough. When she finally gets there, she sees a handsome prince. She rescues him when he falls in the water during a storm. For weeks after she dreams and sings of nothing but the prince. As the familiar story goes, Hello Kitty sells her voice to the sea witch in exchange for legs. Happily, the prince recognizes her almost immediately and kisses her on the cheek, thus breaking the spell and Hello Kitty gains back her voice. They live happily ever after.

Both books are great for the littlest fans of Hello Kitty. The shorter, sweeter version of both stories is very suitable for the youngest readers and won’t give any nightmares before bed, which is appreciated for those with active imaginations. The illustrations are just as adorable as parents remember Hello Kitty being. Bright, colorful, and simple. Children will love to point out what they see clearly, like birds, flowers and sparkly undersea castles. Even the words are simple, which is great for beginning readers, too. The padded hardcovers are of good quality and will last through many, many re-reads. And you’ll absolutely re-read them!

Highly recommended for the preschool set.
