If you were to judge a book by its cover, judge this one—hooray for an idealistic, empowering girl book that moves away from the stereotypical pink and brightens bookshelves everywhere with its red and sparkly illustrations. Ladybug Girl, a New York Times bestseller, has lots of personality and is the perfect story for girls who enjoy dressing up, the great outdoors, or have brothers.

Lulu’s parents have work to do around the house. Her older brother is on his way outside to play ball with his friends, and tells her, “You can’t play with me; you’re too little.” After deciding that there is nothing to do inside, Lulu, dressed up as ‘Ladybug Girl,’ heads to her backyard with her dog Bingo. Who can resist a ladybug, better yet … who can resist an adorable little girl dressed up in a ladybug costume, set for adventure and ready to make her own fun?! Ladybug Girl proves that nothing beats the great outdoors, as she skips over a huge and twisty tree trunk and moves a big rock from the path of a trail of ants. This book shows kids how fun life can be when we put our imagination to work—and that maybe we’re only as big as our imagination and courage!

Be sure to check out the inside cover so you can see Lulu dressed in many different costumes. My daughter and I love this book so much that I would love to see Jacky Davis and David Soman create a story around every single costume displayed. Ladybug Girl was a story created around their daughter Lucy, their next book, which is titled ‘Ladybug Girl and Bumble Bee Boy,’ is scheduled to be released by Penguin in 2009. It is about friendship and features a character based on their younger son, Sam. I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy!
