As adults, most of us probably think we know everything that’s worth knowing about magnets: this book delightfully reminds us that there is more to magnetism than we might remember! Magnets aren’t just a fun way to store paperclips, they are an essential part of modern life: “A world without magnets would be a world without computers, printers, cell phones, televisions, vacuum cleaners and microwave ovens” (1). Full of an engaging mixture of fact and hands-on-activities, this book helps young readers learn this fascinating branch of physics for themselves.
Throughout the book, Anna Raff’s fun cartoon illustrations stop the facts from becoming over-powering, whilst simultaneously providing subtle visual cues to some of the more complex ideas. The best part of this book, however, is the way in which fact is supported by practical experiments that a child can try out easily, such as using a magnet to test coins or to create a home-made compass. It is certain to provide hours of fun (if a certain amount of mess where iron filings are concerned), and get your young physicist off to a great start.

About the Author
David A. Adler is the author of nearly 200 books for children. He was a New York City mathematics teacher for nine years before becoming inspired to write his first book. When his wife gave birth to their first child, David stayed home to take care of his son and to write, which he has been doing ever since. He lives in Queens, NY with his wife Renee.
About the Illustrator
Anna Raff is an award-winning illustrator of many children’s books. She has an MFA from the School of Visual Arts and lives in New York City.
