My Writing and Reading Life: Mary G. Thompson

The Children’s Book Review | August 13, 2014

Mary G. Thompson

Mary G. Thompson was born and raised in Cottage Grove and Eugene, Oregon. She was a practicing attorney for more than seven years, including almost five years in the U.S. Navy, before she moved to New York City to write full time. This is her third novel. Visit her website at marygthompson.com.

Latest published book …

Evil Fairies Love Hair

You wrote it because …

My first book, Wuftoom, was very dark and had a lot of deep psychological content. My second book, Escape from the Pipe Men! was a straight-up sci-fi adventure. With Evil Fairies Love Hair, I was ready to try humor. I can’t wait for people who only know me from Wuftoom to see that my world is not all gloom and doom! I owe it to folks to make them laugh!

Best moment …

There’s one joke that made me laugh so much, I used it twice. I hope I’m not the only one who thinks it’s funny! It involves a couple minor characters who hex each other.

Your special place to write …

I work at home on my iMac. Going anywhere else takes too much effort!

Necessary writing/creativity tool …

Butt in chair. Also, if I’m being honest, coffee. I’ve tried to quit about a thousand times, but as of now, I’m back to tolerating amounts that could probably kill an un-acclimated elephant.

Favorite bookshop …

In New York, where I live now, Books of Wonder. In my home state of Oregon, Powell’s Books.

Currently reading …

Lots of nonfiction. I’m going through a phase.

All-time favorite children’s book you didn’t write…

Archer’s Goon by Diana Wynne Jones.

An author you idol …

Diana Wynne Jones

Favorite illustrator …

I have to say the man who did the illustrations for Evil Fairies Love Hair, Blake Henry. He perfectly expressed exactly what I was going for. And his drawings are hilarious!
