Sophie la Girafe, or Sophie the Giraffe as she is commonly known in the US, is a worldwide phenomenon with good reason. She’s cute, she’s fun, and she squeaks. She’s instantly recognizable. Babies and toddlers will delight in these two books featuring everyone’s favorite teething toy. Children who own the Sophie la Girafe toy will get a kick out of following her on adventures. But Sophie is cute enough that even children who haven’t met her before will quickly find she is their new best friend. Highly recommended for children 0-3.
In SOPHIE’S BIG FIRST WORD BOOK, follow Sophie from place to place as she asks children to identify what they are seeing. First children will have to find “the yellow toy that goes quack, quack.” Later, children must find something in the house that is a round, circle shape. The book mixes objects, shapes, counting skills and of course, words and pre-reading. The illustrations are bright and the matching word with each object help pre-readers solidify skills. And even babies who can’t speak can point to the objects they recognize. This is a great book for children who like flash cards, as it is a similar concept.

SOPHIE’S PULL THE TAB PLAY BOOK is a delightfully interactive take on the “lift the flap” concept. This is a sturdier design with hefty tabs that smoothly reveal fun surprises in the windows. Sophie is looking for her friend, Josephine the Mouse, and readers follow along looking for her. The bright colors and cute illustrations are engaging and fun, and even the smallest toddlers (and some babies) will like pulling the tabs over and again.
