When I first heard about The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition, I was so excited that I immediately went to a local gift store to pick one up. Our little elf, who my daughter has named ‘Elf’, came in a very presentable gift box which also contained a book that explains all about this wonderful tradition.
The Tradition: The tradition began in the ’70’s with Carol Aebersold’s family. Each year around Thanksgiving, Santa delivers your elf to your house. It is the elf’s duty to watch over your kids so he can give Santa a naughty-or-nice report each night (a great incentive to encourage good behavior and manners). The elf returns from the North Pole every morning to a new spot in your house, so when the children wake up in the morning they excitedly race around the house trying to find the elf.
The Book: The tradition is explained with a very clever rhyme (I love books that rhyme), and is complimented by fun and heart-warming illustrations. It’s a great book that the whole family can appreciate! There is a special spot at the back of the book where you can record your elf’s special name and the year you started the tradition.
The Elf: With his red suit, complete with a white frilled collar and red hat, he is in perfect North Pole uniform. His hair and face give him a vintage look, especially with the painted lips and rose-colored chubby cheeks. Adorable! Don’t forget to save the gift box so you have a special place to save him for the years to come.
