The Girl who Could do Anything is a picture book that pays homage to the accomplishments of black women, but also a reminder to girls and boys of all ages, shapes, and sizes that anything is possible.

African American women are often overlooked and undervalued and this story highlights the power and versatility that is “Black Girl Magic”. Kade is a little black girl who struggles because of the lack of representation of people who look like her that appear on television. An angel named The Brown Sugar Fairy visits Kade at night with the mission of enlightening her about the women that have come before her and also inspire her to achieve the same amount of greatness if not more. “Take this book, it’s your gift so your friends know it’s true that there’s nothing in this world that you can’t do!” These are the words the Brown Sugar Fairy leaves with Kade, after teaching her about different changemakers in the African American community. The final words Landry provides the reader are extremely important because the knowledge of these stories should not just be limited to African Americans or even just to girls, these are people everyone should know about.

Landry uses rhyme and language to tell an intriguing tale, that is quick and enjoyable to read. The illustrator Jessica Jones captures the entire essence of the story with her vivid images and does a remarkable job of portraying the women that this book is meant to honor. Overall, this book will give families the gift of knowledge, inspiration, and empowerment; and will provoke a greater dialogue about different stories and perspectives.
