The Importance of Diversity: Teaching Diversity with Children’s Books

After coming across a Fox News clip about a father upset about a religious book found at a school fair, I thought I would take the opportunity to share a wonderful article about teaching diversity. I also thought I would share that the particular book mentioned in the news clip is a beautifully illustrated picture book that introduces young children to Islamic culture through wonderful lyrical rhyme. TCBR highly recommends Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns: A Muslim Book of Colors, by Hena Khan.

Building positive identities and a respect for differences means weaving diversity into the fabric of children’s everyday lives. Working with families is an important first step in helping children accept, understand, and value their rich and varied world.
