The Song for Everyone brings the joy of music in our hearts to life. In the story, a boy passes under a small window each day on his lonely walk to school. But the beautiful music coming from the window, represented by a swirl of flowers, brings him such joy that he happily walks to school, and his spirits lift. The same happens to an older woman going to town for bread and milk and a lonely cat who needs to find a family.
Everyone in town loves the beautiful music that threads through the streets and lifts their spirits until one day when the music stops. The townspeople grow sad, so sad they can barely carry on.
Luckily, the boy decides that if everyone can lift him, he can peek into the high window and find out what happened. The townspeople work together to lift him up, and he discovers a tiny wren who can no longer sing. She’d been singing her heart out for the town, helping keep everyone happy, and now she was out of song herself. The town pulls together to help her get well, and eventually, the wren and the boy sing a song that the whole town can unite with—a happy ending and community love for all.
The prose is beautifully poetic and feels musical. Children will love to snuggle and listen to this story, watching for the bird that is found and must be tended to. The music that floats through the book in the illustrations is floral, ethereal, and enchanting. It shows how cathartic music can be. It’s more than sound—it’s a physical thing that can connect a whole community, lift spirits and heal souls. Music, as the illustrations show, is near magic.

Lucy Morris is based in Norfolk, UK, has an MA in Children’s Book Illustration at Anglia Ruskin in Cambridge and a Degree in Fine Art Painting from Brighton University. While this is her first picture book, she has been an artist all her life.
