Bouncy the Smart Ball was created by Pier Bradshaw and written by Demetrius Bradshaw. Their goal was to capture the reader’s imagination by immersing themselves in the story as if they were there with Bouncy and the kids.
TCBR: Inspired by your faith in God, you were moved to write a children’s book. From inspiration to the finished product of Bouncy the Smart Ball, what was your process?
Demetrius Bradshaw: I was inspired to write a children’s book and put music to it. Not following the specifics, I first suggested to my wife to write the story, and said I’ll make the music for it. But that’s not how it manifested.
It was not an easy task for my wife. Then I realized it was specifically presented to me to write the story. It started out smoothly and at times slumped. But eventually I decided to buckle down and stay focused; thus, the story of Bouncy was born.
You wrote the book for children ages 6 through 8. Why did you choose to write for this particular age group?
Children of this age group have great imaginations. They see the world with purity and innocence. It makes writing for me fun and exciting.
The main character, Bouncy, has great rapport with the children in your story. What is it about this all-knowing ball that enables him to have this close connection with his new friends?
Only children can converse with Bouncy. He’s not just a ball but he befriends them and helps them with life lessons.
What would you say is the most important lesson that readers will take away from reading your book?
I would think the educational aspects that are presented in the story.
Tell us about the illustrations and the creation of your book trailer.
I presented in detail what I envisioned and the illustrator was able to capture them. The book trailer was easy because I wanted it to show Bouncy coming from a distance just as the book cover portrays.
Do you have plans for a “Bouncy” sequel?
Yes, I’m definitely thinking of a series. There’re many adventures ahead with Bouncy.
You started your own publishing company, DPB Products, with your wife Pier. The goal is to not only become a publisher of books but also a variety of products. Will Bouncy be the subject for some of your future products?
Yes, I’m presently focusing on developing an app for Bouncy and toy products.
What was the most surprising thing you learned while establishing your own publishing company?
The many aspects of publishing are like a spider’ s web, you must interact with all phases of development. The work never ceases.
Which books from your own childhood have most influenced your life?
Dr. Seuss’ the “The Cat in the Hat“, “Winnie the Pooh” and “The Bible.”
Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
My goal is to present Bouncy as a new and exciting character that’s simple yet unique. Each story brings new adventure through challenges and teamwork while gaining educational aspects along the way.
So, if you’re looking to have some bouncing fun, join Bouncy and the kids on future journeys.
