What to expect: Christmas, Patience, Loneliness, Hope, Creativity

A Christmas star sits on a store shelf unsold in Lightsville just as it has done so for many years. With aspirations of adorning somebody’s Christmas tree, the star solemnly looks on as all of the whiz-bang, latest and greatest decorations—“Caroling Candles” and “Light-Up Candy Canes”—fly off the shelves, but still the star remains hopeful. Reminiscent of the beloved classic Corduroy, a kind-hearted girl sees great potential for the plain and simple star and pleads with her mother to make the purchase. When the girl gets the star home she brings it to life with an artful touch of tinsel and Christmas lights and turns it into a beautiful piece of artwork more than fit for the top of their Christmas tree. Author James Jay Gordy has had a nice time concocting this story, and just as a Christmas star is bright, so are the illustrations in the book. Gordy’s illustrations also represent diversity, which is refreshing to see in the picture book market.

“The star still kept hoping that one year things would be different.

Deep down, the star knew it had a greater purpose than this.”

For families that embrace holiday decorating and love the tradition of placing a star atop of their tree, joy will be found in this familiar tale of good things come to those who wait.
