What to expect: Mystery, Twin Brothers, Family Vacation, Perseverance
A Very Squeaky Mystery, starring twin brothers, Kevin and Scott, is an amusing picture book based on curiosity and problem solving.
The twins are on a family vacation staying in a cabin in the mountains. While eating their favorite 4 o’clock snack—a peanut butter and jelly sandwich—they hear a sound: “Squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak.” Despite setbacks, this sound arouses their curiosity and leads them on a three-night hunt to track down the animal —or peanut-butter-and-jelly-eating monster—making the noise.
The authors have developed a light and easy tale that showcases how determination can lead to resolution and, perhaps, even an unexpected reward. The cartoon style illustrations are bright and the peppy expressions on the twins’ faces certainly add punctuation to the text.
This is a good choice for those looking to introduce the genre of mysteries to the youngest readers. It’s a quick read and will also appeal to families with twins.
