What to Expect: Library, Monsters, School

Kristin Winovich’s debut picture book takes little readers on a journey through the school library in the imaginary town of Koobville.   From the first page, we are introduced to the Book Monsters including Vamp, Grut, Dot and Puzz who are represented in various colors and shapes creating a diverse illustrative canvas.  Their teacher, Miss Read, takes them to the school library where they are instructed to find a favorite book.  During their time there, readers are introduced to the various genres of literature and other important vocabulary that are highlighted as all capitalized words.  Readers are taught that fiction books are imaginary stories, but can also be suspenseful and mysterious.  Graphic novels can include comic books and text bubbles which make stories easy to read.  Some of the students even wandered into the multimedia section where they learned to listen to a book and watch videos.  In the end, we learn that not only are there a variety of books offered at the library, you can definitely have more than one favorite.

This colorful, informative story is filled with multiple double-page spreads and simplistic text placement on each page that are appropriate for the early elementary students learning about the library.  However, I found it was the small details within the illustrations (ie. the school posters, the shape of the characters, etc.) that really made this book one of a kind.  The distinctive and creative characters are set up for what could be a potential series about other places to visit in Koobville.  This would be a fantastic addition to any classroom and/or school library.
