The CLOUDLAND Book Series

Written by Chip Hill

Illustrated by Michael Kelley

Age Range: 7+

Paperback: Book 1 – 97 pages, Book 2 – 104 pages, Book 3 – 120 pages

Could there be a strange land up in the clouds hidden from our eyes? Where snow, rain, and lightning come from? Young readers will find out through the eyes, and most especially, the adventures of Jane and Robbie and their Uncle Josh in the Cloudland book series.

In Book 1, Cloudland, when the kids complain that they can’t seem to make friends at their new school, Josh tells them a Cloudland tale about being different. And what a tale! King Nature’s law says that no two snowflakes can look alike, but, impossibly, two twin snowflakes are born. Fearing eventual discovery by the king, the twins embark on a scary journey across Cloudland, seeking a place where they will be safe. The unexpected and powerful conclusion to the tale gives the kids inspiration for solving their own problems.

Uncle Josh’s Cloudland stories come alive in Book 2, Return to Cloudland, when Jane and Robbie are actually taken to Cloudland by some weird creatures called Bumbles. Something has captured King Nature and is terrorizing everyone, can Jane and Robbie help? Separated from the Bumbles and then each other, the kids must overcome multiple dangers in this strange land that they didn’t even think was real. The king’s castle is the setting for a tense finish, that gives hints to more adventures that may await.

In Book 3, Beyond Cloudland, King Nature brings Robbie and his best friend Neely to Cloudland, to tackle a problem the great king himself cannot solve. There is a neighboring land called Darkland, and bad things are going on there that may relate to the disappearance of Robbie’s Uncle Josh. This is a really spooky place, as Robbie and Neely soon find out, and very dangerous too. Searching for Josh, they are captured by an evil creator of storms, and it will take real courage to escape the awful Forbidden Zone.

Young readers will delight in discovering the strange inhabitants of magical Cloudland and will join Jane and Robbie in their adventures. It is fantasy, but without the dark themes of some of the more extreme literature in this genre. Weather connections between Cloudland and our earth are described in a clever way that should encourage additional thought. And the storylines pursue positive themes and lessons. Cloudland is a delightful new world ready and waiting for young readers to escape into.
