Anna Kang and Christopher Weyant are the creators of Theodor Seuss Geisel Award winner You Are (Not) Small as well as series titles That’s (Not) Mine, I Am (Not) Scared, and We Are (Not) Friends. They also wrote and illustrated Eraser, Can I Tell You a Secret?, and Will You Help Me Fall Asleep? Christopher’s work can also be seen in The New Yorker, and his cartoons are syndicated worldwide. This husband-and-wife team lives in New Jersey with their two daughters and their rescue dog.
Christopher Weyant’s Selfie with It Is (Not) Perfect
Our latest book, IT IS (NOT) PERFECT, explores the life lesson that things sometimes don’t go exactly the way you might want them to. Maybe the picture that we have in our heads doesn’t match the reality that we’re facing. With recent events, I think we’ve learned to accept finding the good in the place that we are, even when it’s challenging. For me, IT IS (NOT) PERFECT is about learning that the simple journey of creating something, listening to your own voice, and sharing that journey with good friends, is far more “perfect” than anything you could have imagined.
Anna Kang’s Selfie with It Is (Not) Perfect
Wow, has the world completely changed in the past couple of months! IT IS (NOT) PERFECT, the title and theme of our latest picture book, is painfully relevant. Life is not perfect, especially now with the pandemic. Yet all we ever have is the present and we can try to find silver linings in each moment. All the books in our “You Are (Not) Small” series illustrate at least two different perspectives. IT IS (NOT) PERFECT encourages young readers to worry less about achieving the idea of “perfection,” and instead be more aware of the simple joys in the present, just as our orange and purple friends learn to do in this story.
Christopher Weyant’s Shelfie
My bookshelf is full of art books, cartoon compilations, and graphic novels that inspire me and my art. When I’m not illustrating children’s books, I’m an editorial cartoonist and cartoonist for The New Yorker. The brilliant work of many of my cartooning heroes line my shelves. It’s a place of happiness for me as I think of these books as old friends who are always ready for me to visit and have a laugh together.
Anna Kang’s Shelfie
These are the books that are currently on my desk. I have a few of our picture books because I’ve been recording myself doing #operationstorytime read-alouds for teachers and kids who are online schooling. There are also graphic novels that I love and admire, to serve as inspiration as I try to adapt one of my screenplays (The Lost Tribe of Long Island) into a graphic novel. I have a compilation of my mother’s essays about her life as a Korean immigrant; and a book on needle felting, a new hobby/obsession that keeps me happy and in the moment. Sitting on top of all these books are a few of the needle-felted animals I’ve made. They keep me company as I write.
