What to expect: Fairies, Friendship, and Adversity

Written by indie author Dawn Jean, Adventures of Lexi and Bug: The First Adventure is the initial picture book in a new series about a fairy and a lightning bug who have a chance meeting and form a much-needed friendship that lifts their spirits.

No matter how hard he tries, Bug cannot glow like all of the other lightning bugs. He is tired of feeling like an outcast. When Jared, a bully of a bug, makes fun of him, he flies off to avoid the jeering and laughter. When he encounters Lexi, a blonde-haired and button-nosed fairy who has clipped her wing on a palm tree and cannot fly, the pair commiserate and find that if they put their heads together, they may be able to solve their problems. The author writes it best in the story: “Having friends to lean on is amazing and helps us get through life challenges.”

The story takes place in Neptune Beach, Florida, and the scene is set with a sun “shining bright yellow like a lemon plucked from a tree,” among clouds that are “big and fluffy like marshmallows.” The modest digital artwork offers ocean glimpses, sandy beaches, and tropical greenery. With a friendship formed and new adventures waiting, the last double-page spread provides suggestions as to where the pair may travel to in upcoming escapades. New York, India, or Egypt, perhaps?

Readers that can relate to Bug and Lexi, knowing that things don’t always come easy to all, will enjoy this sweet story about the uplifting nature of a newly found friendship.
