What to expect: Rhythm and Blues, Music, and African-American History

Written by Grammy-winning Terry Abrahamson, whose work has been performed by everyone from Oprah Winfrey to Prince, The Blues Parade takes two friends, Pork Chop and One-Nose Willie, through the history of Blues music. Readers will readily go on this vibrant journey from African musical traditional roots leading to African-American work songs and their influence on current music. Filled with raw energy, rhythm, and soul, a full scale of Blues legends grace the pages in this historical feat that doesn’t skip a beat.

“With slavery gone, the songs lived on

Through those who passed em down

Til some who hoped to spread the Blues

Were soon Chicago bound.”

Terry Abrahamson has captured the soul of this music genre. His words form a spiritual, enchanting, and rhymed narrative that delivers a true celebration of the Blues. The retro illustrations are gloriously diverse in both ethnicity and personality. The artwork brings an abundance of context to the words, including plenty of puns and the history of music.

“The Blues can teach you counting and a whole lot more.”

A picture book whose beat is more than just the cadence of the text, the language, lore, and legends that fill the pages of The Blues Parade make for an entertaining reading experience that will appeal to real music lovers, both young and old.
