About the Authors

Robert, Karen & Ella

The Monster Twins represents Robert’s first foray into children’s literature. Having been trained in journalism, Robert has written for media in the United States and England. As a long-time communications consultant, Robert also has written professionally on behalf of clients and governments around the world. In his various roles, he has traveled extensively in North America, the UK, and Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia.

About the Illustrators

The Monster Twins is the first book Karen has designed and illustrated, although she has stretched her creative muscles for many years. Having trained at London College of Fashion and Central St. Martins (UK), Karen has channeled her creativity into numerous areas over the years, including her own line of high-fashion scarves (karenhanvik.com) and a successful career as a digital marketing consultant. An avid traveler, Karen has visited numerous locations across North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, Singapore, and Australia

Karen’s and Robert’s daughter Ella has enjoyed drawing monsters for as long as she can remember, starting when she was just six years old. More recently, she has added a deep interest in architectural drawings large and small, which inspired her to include a number of iconic buildings in The Monster Twins. Ella studied art and design at University for the Creative Arts (UK) and is currently studying for her bachelor’s degree in Computer Animation Art and Design at Bournemouth University (UK). With her family, 19-year-old Ella has spent time in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Singapore.

  • As a future teacher, it is so important for children to see their stories reflected in books. As an individual whose story partially aligns with Bella and Bertie, it would have meant the world. While separation, adoption, and discriminatory laws are “heavy topics,” they are very much real and greatly impact more children than we know. It is so important for students to build empathy in the classroom through books like The Monster Twins. Though it may not be their story, it should inspire them to think more globally about issues! I would absolutely love to have this book in my future classroom 🙂

    July 27, 2020
  • I have 10 grandchildren 5 in Ia and 5 in Ca where I previously lived for 49 years. I also was a teacher in Ca and Ia and reading was a big thing for me and the kids that were in my class. I was also a tutor for reading after class for any grade and the kids heard that over and over again. When I first moved back here to Ia the neighbors kids couldn’t read at all they were 10 and 12 every day after school they brought there homework over and we would do homework with my step son and then each read a book out loud that is so important. All of my grandkids are readers all but the babies there are 2 of them but they have their plastic books and my husband and I both feel when they come to our house they can go into my office and read books pick out whatever one they want to read while they are here. I also have a check out system like they used to at the library so they can take a book, Every holiday we get 16 books and give it to not only the grandkids but also our friends kids and they love it. Those are all hard copy, print books. I only read print books as I am battling this disease and fingers are very crippled but want to keep reading and reviewing . Thank you so much for the chance to make one of them happy!
