Julia Donaldson, an English writer and playwright, is one of my favorite children’s authors. Her latest book to be published in the US is Where’s My Mom? Initially released in the early 2000’s in the U.K., Donaldson’s rhythmic and engaging style combined with Axel Scheffler’s cartoon illustrations, make for a very charming addition to your child’s library.
The main character is a monkey who has lost his mom. A friendly and very helpful butterfly takes the monkey through the forest to find her. Based on the monkey’s descriptions of his mother, the unlikely pair go on an amusing hunt and of course … meet some wonderful and familiar animals that are NOT mommy monkey. After a little lesson on miscommunication and just the right description they find mommy monkey. Daddy monkey also makes an appearance in the book, making for a fun story time the whole family will enjoy.
If you are not familiar with Julia Donaldson don’t hesitate to acquaint yourself with her. She is best known for her book The Gruffalo, and many other picture books illustrated by Axel Scheffler. Her novel The Giants and The Joneses is going to be made into a film by the same team behind the Harry Potter movies. To have every single one of her picture books in your library could only be a positive thing!
